EMM Lab Reports are our version of white papers. These contributions blend theory and practice, offering both an argument and a how-to guide.
Sarah Rayner and Anne Pasek, “Zine-Based Conferencing.” March 2023.
A white paper outlining how and why you might conduct a conference-by-mail. (As such, it's a provocation about the carbon-intensity and conviviality of our current way of sharing research, and some thoughts on how things could be better). It describes key details and lessons learned while organizing DIY Methods 2022.
Anne Pasek, “How to Get Into Fights With Data Centers: Or, a Modest Proposal for Reframing the Climate Politics of ICT.” July 2023.
A zine advocating for a different approach to digital sustainability through local, coalitional opposition to data centre expansions. It includes a tutorial on how to use terminal commands and IP geolocation tools to identify data centers in which networked data and cloud platforms are hosted.
A downloadable word doc version is also available for a screen-reader friendly experience.
Maintenant disponible en français (avec les remerciements du collectif le nuage était sous nos pieds)! Version de lecture en ligne et version imprimée.
In keeping with our lab values, we aim to publish clear and accessible documentation of what we've learned in the course of pursuing our lab projects. This includes our mistakes, false starts, failures, and eventual triumphs.
Swati Mehta, “HTML and CSS: A How-to Guide.” Experimental Methods and Media Lab. Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario. August 2024.
This guide will introduce you to the world of HTML and CSS. It will teach you how to read, write, and comprehend HTML and CSS, with examples along the way. By the end of this guide you will have designed a static website. This guide also includes troubleshooting advice and additional resources to help you continue learning and improving your HTML and CSS skills.
W. Kees Schuller, “Project Documentation: 4xiDraw.” Experimental Methods and Media Lab. Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario. July 2024.
Documentation for the EMM lab's experiments with 4xiDraw, an opensource home-made version of the AxiDraw pen-plotter machine. The experiment was designed, at the top level, to compare the 4xiDraw with a commercially available pen plotter, the specifics of the experiment focused on whether building an open-source pen plotter was viable, how much time it would take, and how easy it would be.
Sarah Rayner, “Risograph Printing: A How-To Guide.” Experimental Methods and Media Lab. Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario. June 2024.
This guide takes you through different methods and processes of printing on a Risograph machine. It provides troubleshooting advice and additional resources for anyone interested in using this vivid, eccentric, and eco-friendly media for research or artistic pursuits.
W. Kees Schuller, “Project Documentation: CYAN.” Experimental Methods and Media Lab. Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario. June 2024.
Documentation for the EMM lab's experiments with CYAN, a DIY desktop scale carbon capture device originally developed by OpenAir. Building CYAN was part of a larger series of experiments with carbon, investigations of carbon thinking, climate change legibility, and a study of OpenAir as climate praxis.
We aim to integrate our hands-on pursuits with our academic writing projects. Whenever these papers are published in peer-reviewed journals, we'll host open access/preprint copies here.
